Fun Activities
Classrooms and informal settings such as public festivals and gatherings are perfect opportunities to educate people about the importance of Florida's seagrass meadows using materials on this web page. Seagrass critter puzzles and seagrass crowns decorated with drawings of marine animals help make learning about seagrass fun for youngsters. Navigation games help boaters brush up on rules of the road and everyone loves the challenge of identifying fish species. Enhance your next event with added materials to educate people about boating carefully in Florida's shallow waters.
The Seagrass Activity Kit is a suite of activities designed to meet National Science Standards. The kit offers instructions for food chain/food web activities suitable for pre-K through eighth grade in both formal and non-formal educational settings. Using the seagrass community components and a felt board, students can build a seagrass ecosystem beginning with nonliving elements (sun, seawater) and finishing with the living components (seagrass, crab, fish, etc.). The Background Information booklet offers a brief overview of seagrass ecology and the biology of related plants and animals. Younger students can also Build a Seagrass Puppet Community and make use of the Seagrass Animal Cards.
